I count myself really privileged to be one of the official photographers for Bury in Bloom, an independent charity in Bury St. Edmunds whose aim is to promote our green and beautiful town. I am thoroughly enjoying being part of such a dedicated group of people, many of whom are volunteers who work alongside representatives from the local authority, business and education sectors, and I am thrilled that my photographs are able to contribute in a small way to such an inspiring local cause.
I was pleased to again be asked to photograph this year’s Anglia in Bloom judging. This annual competition sees the judges award honours in a range of categories, touring floral towns and villages across East Anglia to find the best the region has to offer. Thankfully not as hot as last year, when we all almost melted under an absolutely scorching sun, the judges spent the day looking at all the initiatives that Bury has undertaken as well as all the beautiful floral displays around the town. As one of the charity’s photographers I get to see (and photograph) many of the projects either arranged by or sponsored by Bury In Bloom that take place throughout the year so it’s really lovely to see all the groups get together and show off what they have done over the past twelve months along with their ongoing schemes and plans for the future.
Similar to last year, Greene King, the local brewery and one of the Bury in Bloom sponsors, provided a buffet lunch at the Beer Café for everyone which was a nice touch. It was also a good opportunity for me to take photographs of the guests and sponsors so I earned my lunch.
The Anglia in Bloom awards ceremony will be held in Gorleston in September where the winners will be announced. We are cautiously hopeful that Bury has done well, but all we can do now is cross our fingers and wait.
