As a Suffolk photographer living near the picturesque town of Bury St Edmunds I feel privileged to be one of the official photographers for Bury in Bloom. An independent charity, Bury in Bloom aims to promote a green and beautiful Bury St Edmunds. I work for them on a voluntary basis throughout the year photographing the various events that the charity is involved with as well as the many beautiful floral displays that the charity provides to the town.
Today was the first call to arms for 2017. I duly travelled across town to photograph the unveiling of St Edmund’s Crown, a steel and willow sculpture, on one of the town’s roundabouts. The sculpture was paid for by local brewery Greene King and Bury in Bloom and the brewery also sponsor the roundabout. The crown is the emblem of both the brewery and the town.
Spring had arrived in abundance and the sun shone – maybe a little too brightly and from the wrong direction from a photographer’s point of view – but it was so lovely to have warm weather and blue skies. A rather lovely touch to the proceedings was that one of the council park keepers, working his last day before retirement, was asked to lift the cover and reveal the sculpture. You did us proud David Notley and I wish you all the best in your retirement.
After the official photos we all decamped to the Greene King Beer Cafe for some light refreshments. I then had the pleasure of taking some more informal images for Greene King.
Anyway, here are some pictures from the morning. None of the actual unveiling itself I’m afraid at the moment due to the fact I’m awaiting the go-ahead to post the pictures which contain identifiable schoolchildren (as a responsible photographer I have to be so mindful of school safeguarding policies) but here are a selection of other images from the occasion.
